Part III – Thank you Facebook
Our senior year of college we had one of those quick conversations again, but this time we caught each other when we were both online. We messaged back and forth.
Michael: So, what have you been up to?
Laura: Not much, looking forward to break. I’m going to a conference I’m really excited about.
Michael: Oh cool, me too. What is yours?
Laura: It’s a mission conference in St. Louis.
Michael: Wow, I’m going to that too.
OK, so those weren’t the exact words, but it was the gist. Somehow we caught up just before traveling to ST. LOUIS for a conference over winter break. WHAT!? We hadn’t seen each other in over 3 years and we were going to finally be in the same place at the same time, 6 states away from home.
Once we got to the conference, we tried to meet up a couple times, but kept missing each other. Finally, during a large group (a stadium of tens of thousands of college kids, we texted back and forth. He tried to find where my friends and I were sitting. He texted that he thought he was in the right section, I turned around and saw him about 10 rows back. And (brace yourself.. I’m going to get totally sappy here) my heart started to pound. Like not breathing right, a little shaky, and insanely excited. Why? I have no idea. I mean I had broken up with this kid nearly 4 years ago and had barely spoken to him since. It made no sense. But, we spent the rest of our free time at the conference together. Turns out we were staying in the same hotel, in the same room, just one floor away.
One night I went back to my room and one of my friends I was staying with asked if we were dating, if I liked him, what was going on. I told her, “I don’t know, it’s just been so long since we’ve seen each other”. She replied, “You’re going to marry him”. I swear. She took, “I don’t know” and turned it into marriage. I thought she was crazy.. Turns out she was right.
