Today, we’re sharing Annie and Paul’s Boathouse Richmond wedding day here in Richmond! Their ceremony was at Stony Point Church on the south side, and their reception was at The Boathouse at Rockett’s Landing, which gave them that perfect mix of classic and city vibes.

Annie and Paul really focused on what mattered most to them: spending time with their friends and family. They didn’t prioritize detail shots or an extended getting-ready timeline. Instead, we captured the moments that were most meaningful—like their beautiful ceremony, family portraits, and the energy-packed reception.

One thing we loved was how intentional they were about their family photos. Instead of defaulting to altar photos, they opted for the church’s entryway, which had gorgeous natural light and lovely architectural details. It’s the default for family photos to be done at the altar, partially because it’s an easy marker for larger family photos that are typically taken afterwards. But, it doesn’t have to be. Remember that if you are planning your own wedding.

Think about rain and wind

Stony Point’s covered entry was a total lifesaver too, especially since it poured all day. We actually photographed a wedding here last year, and the covered porch came in handy then too. It’s also very pretty, simple, and clean, making it an easy spot as a backup, despite the rain. Pro tip: when choosing a venue, always consider backup plans for bad weather. Pretty overhangs and covered areas can make all the difference!

We had planned to do more portraits at The Boathouse, but sometimes things shift, and that’s okay! We got everything we needed in that cozy spot at the church. Then it was off to the party—and wow, did they party! Annie and Paul spent almost whole night on the dance floor once dinner was done, pulling their guests in and keeping the energy high. Their band was incredible (a saxophone always brings the vibes!), and it was so fun to see a smaller wedding with a packed dance floor!
