Today, we’re diving into something that can be surprisingly tricky—your wedding day timeline. It might not be the most glamorous part of planning, but trust us, it’s so important. A well-thought-out timeline keeps the day running smoothly, helps you avoid unnecessary stress, and gives you more time to enjoy the celebration. No one wants to feel like they’re racing the clock on their wedding day! So, let’s talk about the most common wedding timeline mistakes, things couples sometime overlook, and how you can avoid them.
One of the biggest timeline pitfalls happens before the festivities even begin: the getting ready portion of the day. Hair and makeup—especially for a larger wedding party—can easily take longer than expected. Many couples assume a couple hours is enough, but between multiple people, touch-ups, and last-minute adjustments, it can double. Plus, if you want time for those fun robe photos with your crew— keep in mind those shots should happen after hair and makeup are done and before you get dressed.
The location where you get ready can seriously affect your timeline. We’ve seen beautiful rooms turn chaotic when they’re too cramped for the wedding party, beauty teams, and photographers. And if you’re trying to avoid seeing each other before the first look or ceremony, double-check the layout to prevent accidental run-ins. Beyond logistics, choose a space you’ll genuinely enjoy being in—spending your morning in a calm, beautiful environment can set the tone for the rest of the day. Pick a spot that reflects your style and feels relaxing, whether it’s a cozy suite, a bright and airy room, or a space filled with special details. Being surrounded by a setting that puts you at ease can help you fully soak in the excitement and joy of the morning preparations.
It’s easy to set a photo start time before confirming hair and makeup details, but that’s one of the most common wedding timeline mistakes. If hair and makeup need four hours and your venue opens late, you could be cutting it close. Communicate early with your beauty team to figure out how long they’ll need, and pay close attention to the order in which people get their makeup done. The bride should avoid being the last person in the chair—if things run behind, it’s much less stressful to have buffer time after her makeup is done rather than feeling rushed. Ideally, the bride should be finished about an 45-60 minutes before she needs to get dressed to allow time for touch-ups, relaxing, and enjoying the moment.
If you’re traveling between locations, add extra time—a lot more than just what Google Maps tells you. Loading and unloading a trolley or shuttle can be surprisingly slow, especially when everyone’s excited and moving at a more relaxed pace. Large vehicles also take longer to navigate traffic and tight roads, which can add unexpected delays. Even short trips—like heading to a nearby park for portraits—can be deceiving; just gathering the wedding party, loading up, driving, parking, and unloading can easily eat up 20 minutes or more. So make sure your bridal party knows that when it’s time to leave, they should already be on the bus by then. And if you’re traveling during rush hour or through busy city streets, it’s best to double-check how that could affect timing.
Small things can cause unexpected delays. Putting on your dress (especially with lots of buttons) can take much longer than expected—sometimes needing extra hands, so keep that in mind. Steaming gowns, especially delicate fabrics or multiple layers, often takes more time than planned.. All steaming should be done before hair and makeup, so that it doesn’t mess up the artists fantastic work. Tracking down missing accessories like earrings, shoes, or veils can create last-minute stress.
Things rarely go perfectly to schedule—and that’s okay! But without buffer time, feeling rushed is inevitable. After your first look or pre-ceremony photos, give yourself a break to hydrate, freshen up, or just be present. This short pause not only helps you breathe and take in the moment but also allows time for unexpected delays—like fixing stray hairs or touching up makeup. While you’re taking this breather, your photographers aren’t taking a break—they’re busy capturing all the important ceremony and reception details before guests arrive, ensuring nothing is missed and your final gallery is filled with the meaningful touches you’ve planned.
Dreaming of golden hour portraits? Timing is everything. Light fades quickly, and starting just 10 minutes too late can change your photos drastically. This magical time of day creates warm, flattering light and a romantic glow you won’t get at any other time. Remember, the window for that perfect golden hour light is short, so being ready and on time is key to making the most of it. To take full advantage make sure you think about when sunset may fall within the events of your reception. Talk with your photographer to pinpoint the best time and plan ahead so you can fully enjoy the experience without feeling rushed.
Your timeline should be about creating a day that feels good for you. Laugh with your friends, sip champagne, and be present without stressing about what’s next. Prioritize padding your schedule so you can relax, take it all in, and truly enjoy the celebration you worked so hard to plan.
