Today we are talking about a maternity session that we did at the VMFA here in Richmond, just this past weekend.
It was a beautiful but very hot day.
If you haven’t been to the VMFA before, we shoot there all the time. It’s great because it gives a lot of variety in a small space.
It’s a really wonderful spot to shoot if you’re a photographer here in Richmond or you’re looking for a session location. It does provide a ton of variety. They are gorgeous trees, cool different buildings, there’s a little courtyard area at the top of the stairs.
You have a ton of different options in a really small area and there’s always parking available.
There are also a lot of clean brick buildings around the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
We started at the top deck area. It had actually rained before our session. We were hoping that he would come down a little bit because of that.
Typically in the summer when it rains it gets cooler, it brings in the cold front. That day I did not. We were actually excited about the rain, that it may cool things off, but it didn’t.
It was so so hot. It’s sticky and humid.
You would think that going upstairs at the museum he would have some breeze but we didn’t.
Emily and Mike showed up. Emily looked so gorgeous. I kept telling her you’re not supposed to look like this when you’re pregnant. She was just stunning.
We took them to the top of the VMFA courtyard, sculpture garden. We started shooting there. Within minutes we were so hot. I feel terrible for her. But she was such a trooper. And honestly I think you can’t even tell in the pictures she was just so gorgeous.
Then we switched outfits and shot at the lower part of the sculpture garden at the VMFA (Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Sculpture Garden). She had this cute short dress that she changed into so hopefully that was a little more comfortable with the heat.
She got her hair and make up done and looked gorgeous. But it was still just so hot. I can’t imagine having done that at eight months pregnant. But she did it and she was flawless. And in heels.
If Emily looks familiar it’s because she’s a past bridesmaid of one of our couples from last year, Kate and Eric, who got married at Amber Grove. We always love when people from past weddings or friends of past couples come and schedule a portrait session with us. It’s kind of like it’s keeping in the family.
And even more fun that we get to go and shoot newborn pictures for them. So once baby boy comes you will be seeing them again.
But enjoy some of our favorites from this VMFA maternity session. Congrats Emily and Mike we love you guys.
